👋 Hey there,

Building features nobody wants? Guessing at pain points?

This prompt creates research questions that uncover real insights.

The User Research Prompt

Generates interview questions that reveal what customers actually need.

📋 THE PROMPT:

Create a user research interview guide for [PRODUCT/SERVICE/FEATURE].

Research goal:

  • What I want to learn: [SPECIFIC QUESTION]

  • Target users: [WHO TO INTERVIEW]

  • Stage: [DISCOVERY/VALIDATION/FEEDBACK]

  • Decision I'm trying to make: [WHAT DEPENDS ON THIS]

Generate:

Opening Questions (5 minutes)

  • Build rapport

  • Understand their background

  • Set context for conversation

Current State Questions (10 minutes)

  • How they handle [PROBLEM] now

  • What tools/methods they use

  • Pain points and frustrations

  • Workarounds they've created

Deep Dive Questions (15 minutes)

  • Specific scenarios and examples

  • "Walk me through the last time..."

  • What success looks like

  • What failure costs them

Solution Exploration (10 minutes)

  • "If you had a magic wand..."

  • Ideal solution description

  • Trade-offs they'd accept

  • Willingness to pay/switch

Closing Questions (5 minutes)

  • Anything we didn't cover

  • Other people to talk to

  • Permission to follow up

Include:

  • Follow-up probes for each question

  • What to listen for

  • Red flags and good signs

🎯 HOW TO USE IT:

  1. Define what you need to learn

  2. Generate the interview guide

  3. Interview 5-10 users

  4. Look for patterns across responses

  5. Make decisions based on data, not guesses

💡 PRO TIP: Don't ask "Would you use this?" People lie (or don't know). Instead ask "Tell me about the last time you had this problem." Past behavior predicts future action.
